AT&T has announced the support of FaceTime over cellular for its iPhone subscribers who are in tiered or shared data plans. Facetime was introduced by Apple in iPhone4 to make video-calls over WiFi but last year it was introduced to cellular subscribers also.

AT&T, earlier allowed only iPhone 5 users to use the feature on cellular network over tiered data plans. Now, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad 3/iPad 4, or iPad Mini users who have tiered data plans and unlimited plans can use FaceTime over cellular network.

Sprint and Verizon iOS users in US already enjoy the feature from the time when it was launched by Apple.

However the policy change by AT&T has left out those with grandfathered unlimited data plans.

AT&T’s Consumer Blog:

“When FaceTime over Cellular launched in September 2012, we explained that we wanted to roll it out gradually to ensure the service had minimal impact on the mobile experience for all of our customers.

As a result of ongoing testing, we’re announcing AT&T will enable FaceTime over Cellular at no extra charge for customers with any tiered data plan using a compatible iOS device.

This means iPhone 4S customers with tiered plans will be able to make FaceTime calls over the AT&T cellular network. AT&T previously made FaceTime over Cellular available to customers with a Mobile Share plan and those with an LTE device on tiered plans.”

Free Press says that AT&T has taken a correct step by allowing FaceTime over cellular for tiered data plans. It further says that the company has no right to block the feature and it should be made available to all the users, otherwise it will be considered as violation of law and Net Neutrality.

AT&T will be rolling out the update to its users except for those in unlimited plans in coming week!

It is a welcome news for all those who are using iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, etc. and good that the old models are getting this benefit without the customers having to replace them.
