iOS 4.3.3 / 4.3.4 Soon To Fix Location Tracking Bug ?

Yesterday there was a shocking news that iPhone is tracking your location and saving in a secret file.

John Gruber from Daring Fireball says that this might be just a bug and Apple will probably fix it in next iOS 4.3.3 / 4.4 update.

The big question of course, is why Apple is storing this information. I don’t have a definitive answer, but my little-birdie-informed understanding is that consolidated.db acts as a cache for location data, and that historical data should be getting culled but isn’t, either due to a bug or, more likely, an oversight. I.e. someone wrote the code to cache location data but never wrote code to cull non-recent entries from the cache, so that a database that’s meant to serve as a cache of your recent location data is instead a persistent log of your location history. I’d wager this gets fixed in the next iOS update.

If you are concerned about your privacy then you can go ahead and install Untrackerd Cydia App which will prevent iPhone to track your location.

One of the research published in BGR states that Apple is not tracking any data from your idevice. The researcher Levinson says that the collected data is used by native iOS apps like Maps and Camera.

The researcher further says that California State law says,“No person or entity in this state shall use an electronic tracking device to determine the location or movement of a person.”
