iPhone 5 Announced – Preorder Starts September 14


Apple has finally announced the launch of much awaited iPhone 5 at a Media event in San Francisco. iPhone 5 as rumored has 4-inch Retina display, is thinner and faster, has in-built iOS 6, 4G LTE connectivity, has A6 chip and claims to have better battery life. It is 7.6mm thick, weighs 112 grams and is made out of Glass and Aluminum.

Home screen has now 5 rows of app icons instead of 4 rows. iPhone 5 comes with New Maps app, better Siri features and a Passport app to store digital information.

Specifications of iPhone 5

Display – It has screen size of 4-inch having resolution of 1136×640.
Pixel density of 326 ppi and display type is IPS LCD.

Processor and battery – A6 Chip , Dual Core Processor and 8 hours of batery life in LTE.

Dimensions – Size is 123.8×58.5×7.6mm with 112 grams of weight.

Storage and Memory – Has Internal Memory of 16/32 and 64 GB.

Camera – Rear camera is 8 MP iSight Camera hybrid IR filter. Has new Panorama mode. A front-facing HD camera to make make 720p HD calls.

iOS – Has in-built iOS 6.

Colors – Black and White.

iPhone 5 will be available for $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB and 64GB is available at a price of $399 for a two-year contract.

Apple has also announced that 16GB iPhone 4S will be available for $99 and 8GB iPhone 4 will be available for free with a two-year contract. Apple has dropped iPhone 3GS completely as expected.

iPhone 5 will be available for pre-order in US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Japan, Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong from September 14th. In US AT&T and Verizon will start accepting pre-orders from 12:01 am and will be launched on September 21. It will be launched in more countries on 28th September.

iPhone 5 does not comes with NFC and wireless charging as expected. In an interview Apple Senior VP Phil Schiller said that Passbook alone does what most customers want and works without existing merchant payment systems.

As for wireless charging, Schiller notes that the wireless charging systems still have to be plugged into the wall, so it’s not clear how much convenience they add. The widely-adopted USB cord, meanwhile, can charge in wall outlets, computers and even on airplanes, he said.

“Having to create another device you have to plug into the wall is actually, for most situations, more complicated,” Schiller said.
